Yobo Tribute: Goodbye Joey & good luck!

The transfer window shut yesterday with only one major move involving Everton. Joseph Yobo, loyal servant to Everton, occasional shakey defender, and all round good-egg leaving for Fenerbache – initially on loan with a view to a permanent move. I’ll miss Joey, not because he set the world alight, but because he’s been with us for such a long time. Yobocop played over 250 times for our great club, after we took him (on loan to start off with) from Marseille. Let’s not forget how good he was for us at the beginning, he was at the centre of our defence when we qualified for the Champions League, and even...

England: Just Like Watching Brazil

World Cup 2010: England http://twitter.com/dixiessixty Germany 4-1 England. It was an escape from victory not Escape To Victory, a bust rather than Dambusters.   And soon after a stampede of familiar moans charged across the horizon:     “It was because we have a foreign manager” (forgetting how the last English manager performed) “They are overpaid” (forgetting how well the players did for their clubs) “We need a manager like Maradona” (I thought Capello’s appointment was needed to add discipline; to tame the wild English style) It is interesting that we compare England to Italy, Germany and France (“they would never employ a foreign manager”) when in reality there...

Everton, England, and 1966 – Garrincha, Ali, Dylan & Ball

When Kurt Cobain was a kid he didn’t know what punk sounded like. Not knowing first hand, he made up his own sound, a rangy sloppy grunge quite different from punk. It was like comparing Johnny Giles to Aaron Lennon. I’m in that position with Everton, I don’t have memories of ’66 – I just stitch together other peoples’ recollections…The past, for Everton, is definitely a foreign country: back then we wore vicar’s collars, enrolled in the School of Science  and were called the Mersey Millionaires, now we shop in bargain basements and dusty flea markets… I was born in the 80′s and found football in the 90′s. Conveniently nestled between these...

Vuvuzelas: Stop Moaning

June 12, 2010
By

By far more annoying than the drone of thousands of Vuvuzelas is the moaning that surrounds it. Firstly its shows a total disregard for the poor blighters who don’t have the privelage of watching this game on TV, secondly – and correct me if I am wrong – isn’t football a visual thing? Why people insist on wailing about Vuvuzelas now when we’ve had to listen to the dirge of tripe that is Tommy Smythe et al is beyond me. In short, the Vuvuzela moaners are over-sensitive goons who care very little about the football feast on offer and instead focus on the “annoying buzzing”. I don’t even notice...

Capello’s Jagielka Mistake

Capello’s Jagielka Mistake

World Cup 2010: England twitter.com/dixiessixty Fabio Capello announced England’s 30 man provisional World Cup squad and made one big mistake – neglecting to call up Phil Jagielka. There were two rumours surrounding Fabio Capello’s choice of players. The first was that he wasn’t going to pick unfit players, and the second was that he preferred specialist players over those that excelled in multiple positions. Neither of these rumours about Capello’s proclivities turned out to be strictly true. Firstly, while the Italian didn’t pick the injured Hargreaves or Lescott – he did pick injury addled Ferdinand, Barry and Ledley King. Secondly, while word was spread that Capello liked specialist players,...
