Ross Barkley is NOT the Answer…Yet

One swallow does not a summer make. Neither should one fluffed pass an Owl make of Ross Barkley. Twitter is a fun place. Knees jerk and fingers twitch at breakneck speeds. People say what they feel on Twitter – and often they are very angry. It’s a similar phenomenon to road rage – people are free to let off explosions of abuse in their cars because they think they are in a sealed bubble where the outside world can’t hear. For some reason, Twitter engenders the same foamy-mouthed anger – perhaps because you can still stay semi anonymous even when shoveling up abuse. The reactions towards young Ross Barkley...

TEN YEARS OF MOYES: When Rooney was Blue

In celebration of Moyes’ ten years in charge of Everton, we’re dipping into the Dixie’s 60 archives to find some of our favourite moments. This post was originally published by me on June 7, 2011. Everton 2-1 Arsenal. 19th October 2002. Arsenal have a special relationship with Everton. When Alan Ball was sold he moved to Highbury. Dixie scored his 60th against them, and Wayne Rooney bagged his first against a seemingly invincible Arsenal. Rooney came on with only the embers of the game remaining and was already furious for not playing from the start. It didn’t take him long to turn the game; sending a long range shot...

TEN YEARS OF MOYES: A Gift from Joseph Yobo

In celebration of Moyes’ ten years in charge of Everton, we’re dipping into the Dixie’s 60 archives to find some of our favourite moments. This post was originally published by me on Feb 21, 2011 . August 13 2005, Everton 0-2 Manchester United Arsenal were the team that Dixie Dean scored his final hattrick against in his 60 goal season. Decades later, they also came up against Wayne Rooney. He became a household name by chucking a football shaped fist through televisions and into living rooms up and down the country. Clive Tyldesley may have sealed the deal by whinnying “Remember the name!…” after Rooney scored his first, but...

60 Games That Shook Goodison: #9.When Rooney was Blue

Everton 2-1 Arsenal. 19th October 2002. Arsenal have a special relationship with Everton. When Alan Ball was sold he moved to Highbury. Dixie scored his 60th against them, and Wayne Rooney bagged his first against a seemingly invincible Arsenal. Rooney came on with only the embers of the game remaining and was already furious for not playing from the start. It didn’t take him long to turn the game; sending a long range shot that looped over Seaman’s head like a vandal’s brick. After the goal the young Scouser was bouncing around like a videogame character somehow transplanted into a world of professional footballers. His feet did what legions...

Attacking Leon Osman

Attacking Leon Osman

In the past few games Leon Osman has been wonderful. He has been the creative fulcrum in a team shorn of stars. That this Everton, a pruned squad facing the business end of the season, has done better than the superstars who started our season and flattered to decieve opens up a lot of questions. Perhaps those worried about our lack of transfer funds, and potential summer sales, should cast their minds back to 2004-05 when we finished 4th, after selling Wayne Rooney the previous summer and Thomas Gravesen half way through the campaign. Despite excelling in a weakened side, finally playing in the position that is best for...

60 Games That Shook Goodison: #3 A Gift from Joseph Yobo

August 13 2005, Everton 0-2 Manchester United Arsenal were the team that Dixie Dean scored his final hattrick against in his 60 goal season. Decades later, they also came up against Wayne Rooney. He became a household name by chucking a football shaped fist through televisions and into living rooms up and down the country. Clive Tyldesley may have sealed the deal by whinnying “Remember the name!…” after Rooney scored his first, but Wayne put his name in lights when, moments after chipping Seaman, he had the tried do it again. The young Scouser was bouncing around like a videogame character, somehow transplanted into a world of professional footballers,...

Defending Wayne Rooney

The reasons that Rooney wanted to leave cannot be crowbarred into a tiny Tweet, they cannot be reduced from a barrage of grievances into a one-inch punch. The worn old adage that form is temporary and class is permanent holds true in another sense for Rooney. No matter how well he does on the pitch, he's always reminded of where he came from.

Yobo Tribute: Goodbye Joey & good luck!

Yobo Tribute: Goodbye Joey & good luck!

The transfer window shut yesterday with only one major move involving Everton. Joseph Yobo, loyal servant to Everton, occasional shakey defender, and all round good-egg leaving for Fenerbache – initially on loan with a view to a permanent move. I’ll miss Joey, not because he set the world alight, but because he’s been with us for such a long time. Yobocop played over 250 times for our great club, after we took him (on loan to start off with) from Marseille. Let’s not forget how good he was for us at the beginning, he was at the centre of our defence when we qualified for the Champions League, and even...
