WHAT HAS DAVID MOYES EVER DONE FOR US?!

WHAT HAS DAVID MOYES EVER DONE FOR US?!

We gave Moyes an opportunity when we took him from Preston and brought him to Everton. But what did the Scot ever do for us? He gave us our pride back after years in the gutter. Tim Cahill. He bought Tim Cahill. He got us into the top four – qualifying for the Champions League with a little fancied team. Ten teams outspent us that season. OK, I’ll give you the Tim Cahill signing, and getting us into the top four. And consistent top 6 finishes, outside the monied elite we are the best team in the land. Obviously the consistent top 6 finishes! But aside from Tim Cahill,...

Moyes Out?

Moyes Out?

I'd happily have Moyes as our manager for another decade, but that was before he couldn't commit to a new contract. Everton may still be married to their manager, but it's troubling that he isn't wearing his wedding ring any more.

Attacking Leon Osman

Attacking Leon Osman

In the past few games Leon Osman has been wonderful. He has been the creative fulcrum in a team shorn of stars. That this Everton, a pruned squad facing the business end of the season, has done better than the superstars who started our season and flattered to decieve opens up a lot of questions. Perhaps those worried about our lack of transfer funds, and potential summer sales, should cast their minds back to 2004-05 when we finished 4th, after selling Wayne Rooney the previous summer and Thomas Gravesen half way through the campaign. Despite excelling in a weakened side, finally playing in the position that is best for...

Michael Moore, Bill Kenwright, and the simmering email lies…

Michael Moore, Bill Kenwright, and the simmering email lies…

I have always been annoyed by Michael Moore, the left wing film maker. He annoys me because in his films he slathers the truth with a layer of slimy lies. It’s as if the central core of truth and fact isn’t enough for Moore – and he thinks he has to wrap it in myth to make it “box office”. In recent weeks a similar tactic has been employed by some Evertonians. Michael Moore positions himself as a documentary film maker, but he’s anything but. Documentary films should show the facts, should peak under the curtain and aim to show the truth. By twisting clips, subtly changing soundbites and...

60 Evertonians: 8.Ian Hart

8.Ian Hart Bio: Ian is a successful actor whose thespian wingspan reaches from his role as paranoid paparazzo Don Konkey in Dirt to playing John Lennon twice. Luckily enough for us, he’s also an Evertonian. Q1.Why Everton? There is a sign on my daughter’s bedroom door which reads “Evertonians are born …etc Q2.Which player from the past would you have loved to have seen? Alan Ball Q3.Favourite all-time player? Big Dunc, even though he was often a bit wayward. Q4.Dixie Dean OR Alan Ball – who’s better in your book?  Alan Ball for the white boots. Q5.You were Nobby Stiles in the film Best, are there any Evertonians that...

Everton and the USA: A match made in heaven.

Everton and the USA: A match made in heaven.

Landon Donovan needs to leave the US to further the beautiful game in his country. This may sound counter intuitive but even as his country rides on a post-World Cup high, soccer still only attracts high numbers of fans through TV – and even then it is watching European Leagues – and especially the Premier League – rather than Major League Soccer. Donovan then, could become more of a household name in the States by playing abroad rather than staying in Los Angeles. It’s obvious that we still pull at the little man’s heart strings – even his Twitter page still contains a profile picture of him in his #9 Everton shirt. Love...

D60 Everton Player of the Season: Tony Hibbert

Tony Hibbert – Some Managers Do Have ‘Em OR How I learned to stop worrying and love our right back. Take a sprig of Baldrick, just a dash of Eminem, throw in some David Burroughs, Marc Hottiger, and Earl Barrett, as well as a nervous field rodent and a shoe. You have both a recipe for disaster and Everton’s erstwhile right back, Tony Hibbert. The current holder of the club record for European appearances – beating even Brian Labone and Colin Harvey – is also my player of the season.   Spare a thought for Tony Hibbert this summer. As we drool over the World Cup he’ll be sitting...

Everton's American returns from the light to darkness

March 23, 2010

So Landon Donovan, our footballing pen pal, has returned to LA. The Home Depot Center in Los Angeles – a distant football colony – with Tom Cruise watching and David Beckham hobbling must be a far cry from the Old Lady Goodison Park. A move back to Everton is possible, and we should push for it as much as we can. Whereas Beckham was brought to the US as a footballing missionary to garner attention for MLS, exporting Donovan will focus foreign eyes on Merseyside. We shouldn’t underestimate just how much of a star we have on our hands either; when Everton signed Lie Tie and Li Weifeng millions...

TOP 60 EVERTON PLAYERS:#35 Andrei Kanchelskis

35. Andrei Kanchelskis (1995-96) 52 appearances, 20 goals The number of goals Kanchelskis scored for Everton from the right wing would make most strikers green with envy. He earns his place on this list thanks to his explosive first season on Merseyside, when he scored 16 goals in 21 games. The season after he was hampered by injury and distracted by an agent whispering sweet transfer nothings into his ear. Kanchelskis is regarded by Joe Royle as the best player he has ever managed, and it was hard to disagree as the Russian sliced through the opposition with his  pace. Mike Tyson’s hugely influential trainer Cus D’Amato used to...

Tim to get his shooting boots back?

November 27, 2009

Sunday’s 212th Merseyside derby at Goodison can’t come soon enough – despondency and despair is in the air and doubts about David Moyes are being voiced, mostly it should be said, by the ill-informed media. What is needed is what we’ll get, a full house, raucous support, a tough, fast, physical game and all Evertonians united against a common foe, with no quarter given or asked. Everton’s team should contain more creativity and flair than of late with Bilyaletdinov back from suspension and Steven Pienaar now fully fit after playing ninety minutes at Hull on Wednesday. Our wings will finally be reopened for business with Baines and Pienaar set...
