Football Protests: Are We All Moaners At Heart?

Football Protests: Are We All Moaners At Heart?

I’m interested in Premier League protests, and especially the battle between the board and protest groups at Everton. Tomorrow I’ll be blogging on the Kenwright Out “issue”, trying to separate fact from the factions, but today I thought I’d post some pictures and quotes I’ve found on t’internet. It doesn’t look like fans of other sides are too happy with their owners or managers either.  Are we all moaners at heart? (Look out for the corking “Abramovich Out!” banner below…) Manchester United Glazers Sir Alex Ferguson Glazers Arsenal Arsene Wenger “Save Arsenal FC. Kroenke out. Arsenal Football Club is in crisis.” Chelsea Abramovich & Ancelotti Phil Scolari Newcastle United Cockney...

60 Games That Shook Goodison:#13.Everton 5-0 Manchester United.

Everton 5-0 Manchester United. 27th October 1984. The 1984/85 Season was Everton’s best ever – but it wasn’t just a procession towards trophies, there were a few upsets along the way too. Our first two league games ended in defeat, a Cup Winners’ Cup match away to UC Dublin ended in a shock 0-0 draw, and days after winning a trophy in Europe, Everton lost the FA Cup final against Man Utd. This game, against a Manchester United side that cost six times as much as Everton’s team, stands out even in a season of victories. Everton had totally changed from the side the year before that was soundly...

60 Games That Shook Goodison: #12.The Cannonball Kid Comes Of Age

#12.Everton 2-1 Man Utd. 14th February 1953. “I’d break any bone in my body for any club I play for…but I’d die for Everton.” – Dave Hickson Valentines Day. Stuck towards the bottom of the second division, Goodison looked to the FA Cup for hope. A crowd of almost 78,000 saw Dave Hickson and his blonde quiff go into battle against reigning champions Manchester United. Hickson, the Cannonball Kid, threw himself head first into this game, and got a gruesome gash above his eyebrow for his efforts.  Hickson had his wound stitched up, unexpectedly returned to the fray, scored the match winner, and even tore his stitches open later in...

60 Games That Shook Goodison: #9.When Rooney was Blue

Everton 2-1 Arsenal. 19th October 2002. Arsenal have a special relationship with Everton. When Alan Ball was sold he moved to Highbury. Dixie scored his 60th against them, and Wayne Rooney bagged his first against a seemingly invincible Arsenal. Rooney came on with only the embers of the game remaining and was already furious for not playing from the start. It didn’t take him long to turn the game; sending a long range shot that looped over Seaman’s head like a vandal’s brick. After the goal the young Scouser was bouncing around like a videogame character somehow transplanted into a world of professional footballers. His feet did what legions...

60 Games That Shook Goodison: #3 A Gift from Joseph Yobo

August 13 2005, Everton 0-2 Manchester United Arsenal were the team that Dixie Dean scored his final hattrick against in his 60 goal season. Decades later, they also came up against Wayne Rooney. He became a household name by chucking a football shaped fist through televisions and into living rooms up and down the country. Clive Tyldesley may have sealed the deal by whinnying “Remember the name!…” after Rooney scored his first, but Wayne put his name in lights when, moments after chipping Seaman, he had the tried do it again. The young Scouser was bouncing around like a videogame character, somehow transplanted into a world of professional footballers,...

Rooney – will he ever win them over?

Rooney – will he ever win them over?

It’s by no means a new phenomenon. Moving from having nothing to having everything generates jealousy and hatred. And it’s by no means a bad thing. After all a chip on the shoulder and a burning competitive edge are the fuel that keeps the Rooney engine purring. But it’s still wrong. Ollie Kay was right to shine a light in the faces of the internet trolls posting nasty rumours in dark corners, but lots of the things written about another footballer, Wayne Rooney, are plastered over newspapers and no one questions them. After the Black Death, when society was tossed upside-down, privileged paymasters bemoaned the fact that upstart men...

Now Everton, reproduce this form – again and again and again!

EVERTON 3 (Bilyaletdinov 18, Gosling 76, Rodwell 90) – MANCHESTER UNITED 1 (Berbatov 16) Everton are developing a handy technique for slaying the top teams; start slowly, size them up, even allow them to land a blow, then come on strong and hit them hard with a combination of punches. Making light of the absence of Fellaini and Cahill the Blues showed that they are capable of overcoming any opposition with their potent mix of team spirit, work ethic and obdurate defending, allied to flair and skill in key areas of the pitch. Osman was, yet again, quite magnificent, on this form a call-up to the England squad cannot be far...

TOP 60 EVERTON PLAYERS:#35 Andrei Kanchelskis

35. Andrei Kanchelskis (1995-96) 52 appearances, 20 goals The number of goals Kanchelskis scored for Everton from the right wing would make most strikers green with envy. He earns his place on this list thanks to his explosive first season on Merseyside, when he scored 16 goals in 21 games. The season after he was hampered by injury and distracted by an agent whispering sweet transfer nothings into his ear. Kanchelskis is regarded by Joe Royle as the best player he has ever managed, and it was hard to disagree as the Russian sliced through the opposition with his  pace. Mike Tyson’s hugely influential trainer Cus D’Amato used to...

Rooney at Everton vs Rooney at Manchester United…

May 16, 2008

This is something I wrote for the Times Online Fanzine Fanzone a while back, I think much of it still holds true. I am still haunted by Wayne Rooney. Even now, sitting in my exile in the rust-belt of the Midwest, his short Everton career boomerangs back into my mind again and again. I was there in the Park End the day Wayne scored that goal. Sat there, in what – looking back – felt like a Royal box seat for Rooney’s coming-of-age – I wasn’t sure exactly what I was witnessing. Was Wayne going to be another false dawn like Danny Cadamarteri, the dreadlocked 17-year-old who came into...
