“History” and “Buying” the Title…

“History” and “Buying” the Title…

There are few more annoying people on this planet than Ryan Seacrest. The American Idol host sports auto-tuned hair, a spray-on voice, and a cliched chin. Even his assorted platitudes sound botoxed and stiff. Seacrest is at his most irritating when he talks about history. “Ladies and Gentlemen,” booms the reality TV Bard. “Last night we had the most watched show in Idol history“. It’s the last word which grates. It could be changed for countless other terms and it wouldn’t even register on my radar. History is a powerful word. By using history Seacrest implies that American Idol has a long and storied background. It doesn’t, and that’s...

Piers Morgan: Not Football’s Antichrist

Piers Morgan: Not Football’s Antichrist

Yesterday Piers Morgan appeared on Fox as part of the studio panel talking about the Arsenal – Man Utd game, this was the first time a Premier League match had appeared live on Fox. Despite moaning to the contrary, Piers Morgan is not the worst pundit to ever talk about the beautiful game on this side of the Atlantic, not by a long stretch. I’ve lived in the US for seven years now and I have seen football broadcasting progress forward rapidly but also regress shockingly on Fox’s subscripion football channel. I’ve heard our ‘keeper called Nigel “Marteeen”. I’ve heard their midfielder called Steven “Gerrard” with a hard G....

Defending Wayne Rooney

The reasons that Rooney wanted to leave cannot be crowbarred into a tiny Tweet, they cannot be reduced from a barrage of grievances into a one-inch punch. The worn old adage that form is temporary and class is permanent holds true in another sense for Rooney. No matter how well he does on the pitch, he's always reminded of where he came from.

Yobo Tribute: Goodbye Joey & good luck!

The transfer window shut yesterday with only one major move involving Everton. Joseph Yobo, loyal servant to Everton, occasional shakey defender, and all round good-egg leaving for Fenerbache – initially on loan with a view to a permanent move. I’ll miss Joey, not because he set the world alight, but because he’s been with us for such a long time. Yobocop played over 250 times for our great club, after we took him (on loan to start off with) from Marseille. Let’s not forget how good he was for us at the beginning, he was at the centre of our defence when we qualified for the Champions League, and even...

Was Arteta a Man Utd Target?

Was Arteta a Man Utd Target?

There’s been a lot of speculation in the last few hours about the fact that young German star Mesut Ozil’s player profile turned up on Man Utd’s site, most people are saying that like obituaries, they do them for any player that might sign – but there were some other interesting players listed in the Man Utd squad – including Mikel Arteta! The link to see these profiles – http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid={FE60904B-C2A8-4E60-9B05-700DBBC29BBC}&section=playerProfile&teamid=&bioid=94383 - is interesting too. Changing the last two digits of the link from 71 upwards will reveal the “fantasy” players – but moving back down reveals normal Man Utd squad players. Did we just get a peek at The Lord of the...

Entire Everton Squad To Leave

June 18, 2010

At least that’s what the press would have us believe. I find it ridiculous that journos on TV and in newspapers are constantly linking Everton players with a move away from the club, it’s as if their shallow paddling pool minds can’t fathom good players playing for Everton. The rote line is similar for every player, and it goes something like this: “Everton are a good club, but for X to really get success he has to move on.” This summer, the transfer tales have reached Pinocchio levels, with a huge slice of our squad as well as our manager being linked away. If all these players are good enough for a...
