Clock ticking for Saha & Cahill

Despite all the negative comment, much of it reminiscent of the refrain “Doomed, we’re all doomed” from the gloomy Private Frazer in Dad’s Army, Everton embark on their customary Christmas travels eleventh in the league, better than the fourteenth of last season and the fifteenth of the season before. And there are reasons to be optimistic: Royston Drenthe just gets better and better; Leon Osman and Marouane Fellaini are bang in form; defensively the partnership of Phil Jagielka and Johnny Heitinga is bedding-down; Tony Hibbert, as usual the butt of much vitriolic criticism, is playing some of the best football of his career; running-man Leighton Baines keeps on bombing down the...

Had the gods divined differently Louis Saha might have been regularly leading the Everton attack with Wayne Rooney. If the money men and Rooney’s complex private life had not intervened they might have appeared together in blue shirts, rather than making the occasional cameo appearances together as they did for United a few years ago. The contrasting styles of the two would have made for a potent partnership; alas we will never see the bull-necked, direct, powerful play of the Rooney of now, in tandem with the more aesthetic rapier thrusts of a fit King Louis, not unless someone, somewhere, resurrects the idea of a Premier League representative side. The visit of...

WIGAN ATHLETIC 0 – EVERTON (Cahill 84) 1 For the umpteenth time in his career it was Tim Cahill’s technique in the box which turned this game, as Everton won ugly, a facility much prized by all aspiring teams. At the back Philippe Senderos made a composed and competent debut, while up-front Louis Saha had what David Moyes described later as a “stonewall penalty” turned down by referee Lee Probert, who also ruled offside what looked a perfectly legitimate goal from Marouane Fellaini. An injury to Sylvain Distin meant that the only change from the team which beat Sunderland saw Philippe Senderos taking his place alongside Johnny Heitinga in...

Lescott, Lescott, WHAT'S THE SCORE?

Lescott, Lescott, WHAT'S THE SCORE?

EVERTON 2 (Pienaar 36, Saha pen 45+4) – MANCHESTER CITY 0 Probably the first piece of advice handed down from father to son, as soon as he shows the slightest interest in kicking a ball, is that `football is a team game’. That the Arabs who bought Manchester City, and who have paid hundreds of millions of pounds to assemble a group of individual players, were never told this in their nurseries or at the expensive private schools to which they were probably sent at an early age, is sad, but happily not our problem. I bet they can tell us a lot about falconry or horse breeding or...
