#15.Everton 6-4 Sunderland. 30th January 1935 – “It was a match of a lifetime; one international player of years gone by told me he had never seen anything to approach this historic struggle.” – Match report. Liverpool Post & Mercury. A wonderful cup tie. 60,000 fans were witness to the ten goals scored in this FA Cup fourth round replay. Reports tell of a crowd bursting at the seams with excitement as the teams took to the field, almost as if they knew what was coming. By half time, Everton were 2-1 up, and after 90 minutes the scores were level at 3-3 – somehow Everton won it 6-4....

60 Evertonians: #28.Albert the Blaugrana

Bio: My name is Albert. I’m an Everton fan living in Barcelona. I’m 19 and I study law. A few months ago I co-founded ‘Barcelona Toffees’, to unite all the Evertonians living in Catalonia. I try to watch Everton when they are on TV and try to attend one game once a year (home or away). 1. Why Everton? My dad made me a FC Barcelona member the day after I was born, so first of all I am a Barça supporter. But Barça was imposed on me by my family, I didn’t choose it. Everton is the team I chose by myself. Everything started in a trip in...

When Babe met Dixie.

When Babe met Dixie.

Eighty-three years ago today, Dixie Dean scored his famous sixtieth goal. Across the Atlantic baseball’s Babe Ruth also hit sixty. These two stars met twice, once in person and once in the record books. Before their talent rushed them into a sporting phone booth they were simply George Herman Ruth, Jr. and William Ralph Dean. They stepped out as supermen – “Babe” and “Dixie” and hit us with a swarm of achievements: 714 home runs (Babe), 37 true hat-tricks (Dixie), a headed goal from the half way line (Dixie), a ball in Detroit hit with such feral ferocity that it left the stadium (Babe), both men even clambered...

60 Evertonians: 17. Liz Forster

Liz Forster Bio: - I’m a 29 year old not dull at all accountant, living in Huyton. Evertonian all my life, with a season ticket in the lower gwladys. Q1. Why Everton? Like most of us, we had no choice! My dad was a blue and as his first born it was passed on to me. My mum and dad used to run a pub and they would dress me and the pub in Everton gear for all the cup finals in the 80’s! The first game I have a memory of was Tony Cottee’s debut against Newcastle in 88/89 season. I was hooked ever since. Q2. I remember...

Paul Dargan Bio: Paul is a freelance writer covering everything from Soccer to Chefs and is a regular contributor to the Followtonians Podcast. Q1. Why Everton?  Well, my uncle beat my dad to taking me to a game. My dad is a Red, if that initial line doesn’t explain that. My first game was on August 27 1988, when Tony Cottee scored the first three of 99 career goals for us. I never looked back and when I was old enough to, began going with my school mates in the mid-1990s. Even though that was the nadir of our generation, I was insatiable and craved the atmosphere surrounding the...

60 Games That Shook Goodison: #1. Dixie’s 60th

May 5th 1928, Everton 3-3 Arsenal “The crowd invaded the pitch and I got more whiskers on my face from the Scotland Road lads than Soft Joe.” Dean on scoring his record breaking 60th goal in one season. In May 1928 Bill Dean, one of history’s most ravenous goal scorers and an Evertonian to the marrow, was at the end of his greatest season. Dean was a roaring muscle-car of a player and by the time the final game against Arsenal came hurtling around the corner he was on 57 goals, a hat-trick away from breaking George Camsell’s record of 59 (and Camsell had set his record in the...

60 Evertonians: 6. Matthew Harrison

6. Matthew Harrison   Bio:  I’m an Evertonian since childhood and a pharmacist in Nottingham. I’m also an avid traveller spreading the word of Everton as often as possible. As a regularly commuter up the M6, I pack a good set of lungs and a badge for the sleeve, but it’s also not unusal for me to crop up at the away fixtures. Football is my passion and Everton is the team I love.          Q1. Why Everton? I was bought a full Everton strip when I was a wee nipper and then saw Tony Cottee bag a few beauties. From then on, the rest is history....

60 Evertonians: 2.Zach “The Ginge” Woosley

There is no single reason that I became an Everton fan. As I began paying attention to European soccer in the mid to late 90's it was nearly impossible to see games in the US. When they did air a match, it was always Manchester United or Arsenal and thankfully neither team made an impression on me. I did see a few Everton matches though, the first I remember was the 95 FA Cup Final and as I saw and heard nothing but Man U this and Man U that (especially in 99), that always stuck with me as a great moment seeing a club topple the evil empire....

Everton and the USA: A match made in heaven.

Everton and the USA: A match made in heaven.

Landon Donovan needs to leave the US to further the beautiful game in his country. This may sound counter intuitive but even as his country rides on a post-World Cup high, soccer still only attracts high numbers of fans through TV – and even then it is watching European Leagues – and especially the Premier League – rather than Major League Soccer. Donovan then, could become more of a household name in the States by playing abroad rather than staying in Los Angeles. It’s obvious that we still pull at the little man’s heart strings – even his Twitter page still contains a profile picture of him in his #9 Everton shirt. Love...
