More than just a draw as Everton make their point

EVERTON 1 (Fellaini 28) – ARSENAL 1 (Walcott 1) The boy behind me name-checking each player as he stepped off the coach, “Sagna, Ox, Szczesny, Wilshere, Walcott”, and “there’s Arteta” was the only sound penetrating the cold of Goodison Road. No boos, no shouts, no profanity. This was the Arsenal team bus, not that of Chelsea or City. It is interesting; listen in on any conversation about football in a pub say, or in the changing room at the gym and the comment from one participant will nearly always be “I love watching Arsenal.” A game against Arsenal doesn’t carry the baggage of accumulated grievance and long-term enmity, it’s...

TEN YEARS OF MOYES: When Rooney was Blue

TEN YEARS OF MOYES: When Rooney was Blue

In celebration of Moyes’ ten years in charge of Everton, we’re dipping into the Dixie’s 60 archives to find some of our favourite moments. This post was originally published by me on June 7, 2011. Everton 2-1 Arsenal. 19th October 2002. Arsenal have a special relationship with Everton. When Alan Ball was sold he moved to Highbury. Dixie scored his 60th against them, and Wayne Rooney bagged his first against a seemingly invincible Arsenal. Rooney came on with only the embers of the game remaining and was already furious for not playing from the start. It didn’t take him long to turn the game; sending a long range shot...

Blue Union & The Everton Board: A Plague On Both Your Houses (Clean Version)

This is a clean version of an article I posted yesterday, so that NewsNow can publish it I’ve removed the naughty words. It can’t have surprised many that Time Magazine’s Person of the Year was the Protestor. From the Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street (and the ever-so-slightly comical “Occupy Detroit”) to the London riots – protests were everywhere. In Washington DC, there was even growing tumult against protests, culminating in a “March to Restore Sanity”. The atmosphere of revolt was bound to bounce over to the Premier League, but in doing so it has become ridiculous. We’ve had protests outside the ground, protests inside the ground, even protests...

Football Protests: Are We All Moaners At Heart?

Football Protests: Are We All Moaners At Heart?

I’m interested in Premier League protests, and especially the battle between the board and protest groups at Everton. Tomorrow I’ll be blogging on the Kenwright Out “issue”, trying to separate fact from the factions, but today I thought I’d post some pictures and quotes I’ve found on t’internet. It doesn’t look like fans of other sides are too happy with their owners or managers either.  Are we all moaners at heart? (Look out for the corking “Abramovich Out!” banner below…) Manchester United Glazers Sir Alex Ferguson Glazers Arsenal Arsene Wenger “Save Arsenal FC. Kroenke out. Arsenal Football Club is in crisis.” Chelsea Abramovich & Ancelotti Phil Scolari Newcastle United Cockney...

Piers Morgan: Not Football’s Antichrist

Yesterday Piers Morgan appeared on Fox as part of the studio panel talking about the Arsenal – Man Utd game, this was the first time a Premier League match had appeared live on Fox. Despite moaning to the contrary, Piers Morgan is not the worst pundit to ever talk about the beautiful game on this side of the Atlantic, not by a long stretch. I’ve lived in the US for seven years now and I have seen football broadcasting progress forward rapidly but also regress shockingly on Fox’s subscripion football channel. I’ve heard our ‘keeper called Nigel “Marteeen”. I’ve heard their midfielder called Steven “Gerrard” with a hard G....

Why we are all Arsenal supporters now

The ground just shifted. When even a ‘permanent’ member of the Premier League’s elite like Arsenal can’t hold onto their top players – when Arsene Wenger concedes that the financial firepower of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United and City now sets them apart from other clubs – you know something significant just happened. Perhaps Cesc Fabregas finally moving to Barca and ending what has become an annual season-end saga isn’t a surprise – but the price is. £30m plus add-ons of £5m or so for one of the best midfielders in the world, who is young (24) and still had four years left on his contract appears close...
