Coleman right back to his best

EVERTON 3 (Osman 25, Jelavic 32, 38) – SOUTHAMPTON 1 (Ramirez 6) For the visit of Southampton David Moyes reinstated Nikica Jelavic at centre-forward following his injury lay-off, selected Johnny Heitinga ahead of Sylvain Distin and, thanks to his growing confidence in Seamus Coleman at right-back, was able to field Phil Neville as his holding midfielder. A near capacity crowd at Goodison for a fixture that in recent years would not have attracted such a following bore witness to the excellent start the Blues have made and to the growing feeling that this season might deliver something special.  Nigel Adkins’ team arrived on Merseyside on the back of an...

Tears flow as Tiny finally goes walkabout

The news that Tim Cahill is to join MLS side New York Red Bulls for a £1 mln fee brings the curtain down on eight years at Goodison during which the Australian played a seminal role in the reconstruction of the team in accordance with the David Moyes blue-print. His three goals in 41 appearances last season and failure to find the net throughout 2011, were an indication that his powers were beginning to wane and the newly arrived Steven Naismith has clearly been earmarked as his natural replacement. The opportunity of a lucrative move to a top MLS side and virtually guaranteed first team football was clearly attractive to the 32...

With three games remaining Everton needed just two points to become Champions. The danger, with the team sitting in the departure lounge twiddling their thumbs and waiting for championship lift off, was that nerves would come into play....

How Blackpool illuminated Catterick’s vision

Back in the mid 60’s Blackpool were a solid top division club, able to field a team containing England internationals like keeper Tony Waiters, full back Jimmy Armfield and the prolific Ray Charnley, a lanky old-fashioned centre-forward, who scored 193 goals in 363 appearances for the club. Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Blackpool at Goodison evokes strong memories. It was for the Tangerines that the legendary Alan Ball first played professional football, where he learnt his trade, and it was events at Bloomfield Road, Blackpool on Saturday January 15 1966 that turned out to be a watershed in the history of Everton Football Club. It may well have been the day that manager...

60 Evertonians: 6. Matthew Harrison

6. Matthew Harrison   Bio:  I’m an Evertonian since childhood and a pharmacist in Nottingham. I’m also an avid traveller spreading the word of Everton as often as possible. As a regularly commuter up the M6, I pack a good set of lungs and a badge for the sleeve, but it’s also not unusal for me to crop up at the away fixtures. Football is my passion and Everton is the team I love.          Q1. Why Everton? I was bought a full Everton strip when I was a wee nipper and then saw Tony Cottee bag a few beauties. From then on, the rest is history....

60 Evertonians: 2.Zach “The Ginge” Woosley

There is no single reason that I became an Everton fan. As I began paying attention to European soccer in the mid to late 90's it was nearly impossible to see games in the US. When they did air a match, it was always Manchester United or Arsenal and thankfully neither team made an impression on me. I did see a few Everton matches though, the first I remember was the 95 FA Cup Final and as I saw and heard nothing but Man U this and Man U that (especially in 99), that always stuck with me as a great moment seeing a club topple the evil empire....

Everton, England, and 1966 – Garrincha, Ali, Dylan & Ball

When Kurt Cobain was a kid he didn’t know what punk sounded like. Not knowing first hand, he made up his own sound, a rangy sloppy grunge quite different from punk. It was like comparing Johnny Giles to Aaron Lennon. I’m in that position with Everton, I don’t have memories of ’66 – I just stitch together other peoples’ recollections…The past, for Everton, is definitely a foreign country: back then we wore vicar’s collars, enrolled in the School of Science  and were called the Mersey Millionaires, now we shop in bargain basements and dusty flea markets… I was born in the 80′s and found football in the 90′s. Conveniently nestled between these...

Top 60 Everton Players:#2.Alan Ball MBE

Alan Ball MBE (1966-72)  249 appearances, 78 goals.   “No one was greater than their club, but you came pretty close.” – Tribute sent to Goodison after Ball’s death. ‘I was running back to the centre-circle after I scored the second goal against Liverpool and pure elation welled up inside me. I remember thinking: “I just love this place, I want this place forever.”‘ Alan Ball, August 1966 Ball, who chased his surname perpetually, like a Jack Russel chasing its tail – was a true Everton legend. The zest from this orange haired dynamo was extraordinary, and it was borne out of an utter hatred for losing. Remarkably he...
