S A MAUNDER Bio Pic

Bio: Stephen Maunder is a journalist and writer from Shropshire. He has been attending Goodison Park ever since a freezing 0-0 draw with Leeds United in December 1996. He has completed a thesis about the tabloid presentation of the England football captain in the last twenty years and has written feature articles for BBC News and various football blogs. You can follow him on Twitter @SlideShowsSteve.   Q1.Why Everton? It’s always been Everton and always will be. That’s how I was brought up. Sure, it’s a blessing and a curse but sometimes, just occasionally, they really surprise me and that makes it worthwhile. If for some reason I don’t...

The English Mess

March 2, 2012
By
Paul-Gascoigne-got-his-ch-002

England lost 3-2 to the Netherlands this week. The reaction was very predictable. A swathe of journos and fans shrugged their shoulders and dismissed this as a crapulous England display. They noted that the Netherlands won without exerting too much effort whilst simultaneously not noting that England were understrength. The common opinion of many fans when it comes to England is that they are a degenerate mass of disappointment barely worth a sneer. Supporting England ranks only slightly higher than respecting Piers Morgan. People think that the red tops expect too much and that we have delusions of grandeur. People also like to blame the failures of the England Rugby team on...

KENWRIGHT OUT! Separating The Facts From The Factions

March 1, 2012

ap_time_magazine_protester_thg_111214_wg

It can’t have surprised many that Time Magazine’s Person of the Year was the Protestor. From the Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street (and the ever-so-slightly comical “Occupy Detroit”) to the London riots – protests were everywhere. In Washington DC, there was even growing tumult against protests, culminating in a “March to Restore Sanity”. The atmosphere of revolt was bound to bounce over to the Premier League, but in doing so it has become ridiculous. We’ve had protests outside the ground, protests inside the ground, even protests flying over the ground, a liberal sprinkling of half time and full time boos and chants of “You don’t know what you’re doing”. Yesterday I posted some...

Football Protests: Are We All Moaners At Heart?

Football Protests: Are We All Moaners At Heart?

I’m interested in Premier League protests, and especially the battle between the board and protest groups at Everton. Tomorrow I’ll be blogging on the Kenwright Out “issue”, trying to separate fact from the factions, but today I thought I’d post some pictures and quotes I’ve found on t’internet. It doesn’t look like fans of other sides are too happy with their owners or managers either.  Are we all moaners at heart? (Look out for the corking “Abramovich Out!” banner below…) Manchester United Glazers Sir Alex Ferguson Glazers Arsenal Arsene Wenger “Save Arsenal FC. Kroenke out. Arsenal Football Club is in crisis.” Chelsea Abramovich & Ancelotti Phil Scolari Newcastle United Cockney...

Jelavic may need hernia operation

Jelavic may need hernia operation

Since his thirty minute substitute appearance at Wigan on the fourth of February £5.5m striker Nikica Jelavic has been out with a groin injury. It is now being reported that he might need an operation to cure the problem; medical name pubalgia - to you and me a hernia.  Groin and hernia problems are very common among footballers and can often be a chronic condition which the player ‘carries’ for months. Duncan Ferguson was plagued by this complaint throughout his career and went under the surgeons knife on more than one occasion. Given their financial problems, which have since caused them to go into administration, Jelavic represented Rangers’ single most marketable asset, but one constrained by...

Opposition left-backs beware; Coleman & Drenthe will give you one hell of a chasing

EVERTON 2 (Drenthe 1, Stracqualursi 6) – BLACKPOOL 0 Royston Drenthe’s best performance in a blue shirt coincident with the return to fitness of Seamus Coleman means that filling the hole left by Landon Donovan’s departure just got a whole lot easier. Drenthe started on the right wing, and after the arrival of Coleman as a sixtieth minute substitute, finished on the left, but whichever flank he occupied he was a continual threat. Earlier in the season after another spectacular goal, this time at Craven Cottage, the Fulham manager Martin Jol, who has known of Drenthe since he first emerged at the Feyenoord youth system aged thirteen, said “I...

How Blackpool illuminated Catterick’s vision

How Blackpool illuminated Catterick’s vision

Back in the mid 60’s Blackpool were a solid top division club, able to field a team containing England internationals like keeper Tony Waiters, full back Jimmy Armfield and the prolific Ray Charnley, a lanky old-fashioned centre-forward, who scored 193 goals in 363 appearances for the club. Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Blackpool at Goodison evokes strong memories. It was for the Tangerines that the legendary Alan Ball first played professional football, where he learnt his trade, and it was events at Bloomfield Road, Blackpool on Saturday January 15 1966 that turned out to be a watershed in the history of Everton Football Club. It may well have been the day that manager...

Gary Naylor Evertonian

Bio: First match was the Championship winning game vs West Brom in 1970. I am eternally grateful for having seen so many matches in those glorious years under Howard Kendall. I write, whenever I get the chance, on cricket at 99.94, Cricket on Five, Spin Cricket and Guardian Sports Network, on theatre at westend.broadwayworld.com and recently contributed a football nostalgia piece to The Blizzard. I also e-mail in to the Guardian’s Minute-by-Minute coverage of football, cricket and other sports far too frequently. I’m on Twitter @garynaylor999 if you want to get in touch. 1. Why Everton? My father brought me and my two brothers up as Evertonians. It was about...

A Tale of Two Roystons: Part II – Drenthe

Royston plays football like kids play videogames, getting so excited he rips the controller out of it's socket, other times hes an irritable button basher, occasionally he's inspired, bamboozling pixels and players alike. Should we keep him?
