Nothing Tastes as Good as Skint Feels

Everton 2 (Pienaar 5, Stracqualursi 71) Chelsea 0 THE mantra amongst weight obsessed celebs is “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” – ours should be similar. No league victory for either Man City or Chelsea will come close to matching the full blooded joy of our pair of empty wallet wins. It took just five minutes for Everton to take the lead against the King’s Road dilettantes – Pienaar running on to a ball in the box and lashing into the roof of the net. My mind instantly turned to Saha’s goal seconds after the start of the FA Cup final against Chelsea. It came too early, and I...

Catatonic Everton escape with draw.

Everton 1-1 Blackburn Rovers Everton started this game poorly. Blackburn looked assured, imaginative, and driven. It came as a surprise then that it was the home side that opened the scoring on 26 minutes. Marouane Fellaini’s close range header was palmed away by Paul Robisnosn straight back to the Belgian who somehow scrambled it to Cahill with a combination of midriff and hand and the Australian scored from close range with ease. You’d think scoring would raise morale and tempo, but instead it sent us into a catatonic state. Everton then proceeded to look this gift horse in the mouth for the rest of the game, inviting pressure until...

Duffy….latest in a long line?

ASTON VILLA 1 (Bent 55) – EVERTON 1 (Anichebe 68) Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni better learn how to find his way to Goodison because he’s going to be a constant visitor in the run-up to Euro 2012 as he keeps tabs on Coleman, Duffy and Gibson, his three young starlets who now wear the blue of Everton. First impressions can be misleading but the efficient, cool way Shane Duffy dealt with one of the most potent strikers in the league – Darren Bent – was very encouraging and if he continues to play at this level, he might yet save the club from having to delve into the transfer...

Two left feet win it for Everton

EVERTON 2 (Jagielka 44, Baines pen 83) – WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 1 (Hunt pen 37) In the end it was all down to the slight, unassuming, modest figure of Leighton Baines, the man who possesses the most potent left foot seen in these parts since Kevin Sheedy was in his pomp. Just a few minutes after Everton, in the shape of the freshly minted Marouane Fellaini, conceded an unnecessary, but definite penalty, it was Baines with a whipped left footed free-kick who picked out England team-mate Phil Jagielka allowing him to power an unstoppable header past Hennessey for the vital pre-halftime equalizer. One feels that if Wolves had escaped to their changing...

EVERTON 0 – QUEENS PARK RANGERS 1 (Smith 31)

Everton’s slow start syndrome; no Davie, hypnotism not the answer! It took just half an hour for QPR to put the ball in the Park End net, a goal which in truth had been coming, with the visitors passing the ball neatly, dominating possession and keeping Everton pinned back in their own half for long periods. Amazingly, given all the discussion and a pre-season designed specifically at avoiding the slow starts of previous campaigns, the Blues looked soporific and off the pace. QPR’s passing game isn’t rocket science but Everton did not pressure them enough and were unable to get a foothold in the match. That said Jack Rodwell...
