Everton 5-0 Manchester United.
27th October 1984.
The 1984/85 Season was Everton’s best ever – but it wasn’t just a procession towards trophies, there were a few upsets along the way too. Our first two league games ended in defeat, a Cup Winners’ Cup match away to UC Dublin ended in a shock 0-0 draw, and days after winning a trophy in Europe, Everton lost the FA Cup final against Man Utd.
This game, against a Manchester United side that cost six times as much as Everton’s team, stands out even in a season of victories. Everton had totally changed from the side the year before that was soundly beaten by Wolves, a weak side that finished the season bottom of the table. Manchester United, flush with cash had only lost once that season so far.
It took just five minutes for the goals to start against United, with Sheedy scoring a rare header, out-jumping Moran before succumbing to a head wound that turned into a river delta. It was Everton though who sensed a flagging opponent, coming at United like a shiver of sharks smelling the intoxicating whiff of blood in the water.
On 23 minutes Sheedy scored a second, latching onto a nicely weighted through ball from Heath to curl it past the onrushing ‘keeper.
Adrian Heath scored a close range third on 34 minutes, before two goals were added in the final ten minutes of the game. First a long range effort from Stevens, that slid along the turf and headed straight to the bottom left hand corner. With four minutes remaining, came a deserved Sharp header.
The match was a brutal whirl of attacking football which would have journalists salivating for years to come. Everton’s next league game saw them beat Leicester City 3-0 and climb to the top of the table; they ended the season as champions on a record breaking 90 points.
